SRLF Items - Finding, Retrieving & Using
Finding Items at the SRLF
Records for UC materials shelved in
the SRLF are entered into the MELVYL
Union catalog. The MELVYL records display the location
of an item listed as SRLF. An inventory number, which replaces
the call number, is used to locate the material. Records for
materials shelved in the SRLF are also entered into UCLA Library Catalog,
the UCLA on-line Information System. As in MELVYL, the location
of an item in the UCLA Library Catalog is listed as SRLF and followed by the
inventory number.
Retrieving Items
at the SRLF
UC faculty, staff, and students may
request and subsequently pick up items in any campus library.
Materials designated as non-circulating (Special Collections
and rare or fragile materials) may be used only in the library
that originally deposited them. Inquire at your library to
determine how to obtain access to such material.
Requests are processed Monday through
Friday for delivery by overnight courier to the requesting
campus library. When you place your request, you will be informed
when and where to pick up the material. Requests placed at
UCLA before 11:00 AM are available the same day after 4:00
PM.
Members of the general public may request materials through
their local public, college, or corporate library. Fees and
services vary from library to library.
SRLF will fax, photocopy or scan documents
and articles for delivery to users from most books, journals,
and other materials for a fee. For further details, telephone
310/206-2010, and ask to speak to a Document Delivery Service
representative.
Using
Items at the SRLF
You may consult materials at the SRLF
and you may check them out, with the exception of items designated
as non-circulating or building-use only. The SRLF is open from
1:00 PM - 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday.
- University of California Users
A valid UC student, staff or faculty library card from any UC campus and
photographic identification are required to use materials.
- Non-University of California Users
Potential users who are not UC students, staff or faculty, should inquire
at the Circulation Desk of the Young Research Library at UCLA (310-825-4732)
for further information on library
cards.
Loan Policies
With few exceptions, most materials are checked out to UC
faculty, students and staff for an academic quarter. Non-UC
borrowers (alumni, courtesy and fee library cards) receive
a loan period of two weeks. All books are renewable by mail,
telephone, or directly over the UCLA Library Catalog system, unless another
user has requested them. A few items (especially journals)
may have a limited loan period of one week to all borrowers.
Items designated "building use" may be used in the
SRLF but may not be checked out. Items designated "non-circulating" may
not be used in the SRLF but only in the library unit that originally
deposited them.
