About the SRLF

Opened in 1987, the Southern Regional Library Facility (SRLF) is located on the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) campus. SRLF accepts materials from all 10 UC campuses, particularly those in southern California, including UC San Diego, UC Riverside, UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara and UCLA. Low use library materials in all formats are accepted for storage. In addition to storage services the SRLF also contains an Imaging Services unit which specializes in the digitization and microfilming of rare or deteriorating materials.

About the SRLF Building

Materials are shelved by height in a cool, dry environment. Phase one construction was completed in 1987 and a second phase was completed in February of 1996.

Capacity:
  • Current volumes held: 7,121,634 items (as of August2023)
  • Expected capacity as-built: 7,000,000 items
  • Materials accepted include books, serials, atlases, microfilm, A/V materials, maps and Special collections materials such as archival manuscripts, record boxes and document cases.
Building information:
  • Phase one = 85,860 assignable square feet (asf) of book storage
  • Phase two = 88,472 asf of book storage
  • Each phase is three stories in height, 149' wide and 198' long
  • Staff and service area is 125' wide and 175' long.
  • Three separate master microfilm and master motion picture vaults are enclosed within the building.

Access to materials:

  • Reading room with paging services available to public:
  • In 2014-2015, the SRLF filled over 92,000 requests for volumes and articles.
  • The SRLF truck delivers to and picks up materials at UCLA, Monday through Friday, and retrieves materials from other depositors as needed.

Environment:

  • Average temperature year round in the stacks areas: 67 degrees F
  • Average relative humidity year round in the stacks areas: 50% RH
  • Sophisticated air filtration to remove particulate matter and sulfur dioxide.
  • Low UV emmision light bulbs are used throughout the book storage area
  • Microfilm and motion pictures vaults are maintained at 45 F and 45 % RH

Student positions at the SRLF are typically posted at the beginning of the Fall Quarter and late in the Spring Quarter. 

UCLA Library student jobs are available to currently registered UCLA students only. UCLA Extension students are not eligible for Library employment. Entering undergraduate and graduate students are eligible for employment effective the beginning of the quarter (Fall, Winter) in which they are accepted to UCLA. To maintain eligibility, students must remain registered throughout their employment with the Library. Student status will be verified by accessing the UCLA Student Information System. If a student graduates or loses student status, they will no longer be eligible for student employment. All employees must have the legal right to work in the United States. Upon hire, employees will be required to provide proof of legal right to work in the U.S.
